Most people assume you need a full custom rifle to compete at distance.
But what happens when you take factory hunting rifles, throw them into the Evens Challenge, and stretch them out to 1,000 yards?
That’s exactly what Rob, Jeromy, and Ty set out to test in Episode 10—and the results were a mix of impressive performance, hard lessons, and a whole lot of reality.

- Budget builds can perform—but consistency is everything
- The Evens Challenge exposes real skill levels fast
What This Episode Was All About
This was a hunting rifle edition of the Evens Challenge.
No custom builds. No tuned competition rigs.
👉 Just real-world rifles that people actually hunt with.
And that’s what makes this one interesting.
Because while these rifles can absolutely perform…
They also highlight exactly why most hunters don’t shoot past 400–500 yards.
🔧 Shooter Setups
Ty’s Setup (Budget Build – Arizona)
Ty came in with what might be the most relatable setup for a lot of shooters:
- Rifle: CVA Cascade (7 PRC)
- Optic: Athlon 4-20
- Suppressor: Hybrid 46
- Bipod: CV Life
- Ammo: Factory 180gr ELD-M
👉 This is what you’d call a true budget hunting setup
And honestly—it performed better than most people would expect.
Rob’s Setup (Factory .308)
Rob kept things simple and realistic:
- Rifle: Ruger American Gen 2 (.308) – stock configuration
- Optic: Arken EPL4 6-24×50
- Suppressor: Omega 300
- Bipod: CV Life
- Ammo: Federal 168gr Match
👉 No crazy upgrades. Just a solid, proven rifle.
Jeromy’s Setup (6.5 Creedmoor Hunting Rifle)
Jeromy ran a slightly upgraded hunting rifle:
- Rifle: Tikka T3X Lite (6.5 Creedmoor)
- Chassis: MDT Field Stock
- Optic: Maven RS4 (6-30x)
- Suppressor: Omega 300
- Ammo: 140gr Sierra MatchKing
👉 Still very much a hunting rifle—but optimized for better stability.
Ty’s Run: Budget Build Shows Potential
Ty stepped up first—and right away you could see both sides of a budget setup.
What went right:
- Clean hits at 200 and 400
- Solid callout adjustments
- Good fundamentals
What went wrong:
- Struggled at 600 and beyond
- Wind pushed shots just off plate repeatedly
- Couldn’t close out the challenge
But here’s the important part:
The rifle wasn’t the limitation—it was consistency and conditions.
With handloads and more time behind it?
👉 This setup could absolutely improve.
Rob’s Run: Strong Start, Mental Mistakes
Rob came out hot:
- 3 for 3 to start
- Confident shooting
- Good impacts early
Then things fell apart at 600.
And not because of the rifle…
👉 Because of a mental mistake.
- Dialed the wrong direction
- Overcorrected
- Got stuck chasing impacts
That’s the kind of mistake the Evens Challenge exposes instantly.
Still, a first-round impact at 1,000 yards proved the rifle can perform.
Jeromy’s Run: Consistency Under Pressure
Jeromy matched the strong start and kept things competitive the whole way.
Highlights:
- Clean impacts early
- Strong teamwork with callouts
- Stayed composed under pressure
Challenges:
- Wind shifts at distance
- Limited shots made adjustments tough
- Just missed maximizing points
He finished with 9 points, edging out Rob.
And once again proving:
This challenge isn’t about perfect shooting—it’s about managing mistakes.
The Reality of Hunting Rifles at Distance
This episode made one thing very clear:
👉 Hunting rifles can perform—but they have limits.
- Lightweight builds = more recoil
- Harder to spot impacts
- Less forgiving in wind
And when you combine that with:
- Limited shots
- Changing conditions
- Pressure
You start to understand why most hunters stay inside 500 yards.
What This Episode Really Shows
This wasn’t about who “won.”
It was about showing:
- What factory rifles can actually do
- Where shooters struggle
- How much wind and decision-making matter
And most importantly:
Even good shooters miss.
