If you’ve spent any time around long-range shooting, you’ve probably heard people say you need a high-end rifle to perform at distance.
We’re here to tell you—that’s not always true.
In this video, Rob and Jeromy put a Ruger American Gen 2 in .223 to the test on a 500-yard Know Your Limits (KYL) target… and the results might surprise you.

🔥 Key Takeaways
- The Ruger American Gen 2 can absolutely perform at 500 yards and beyond
- Handloaded ammo makes a noticeable difference in consistency
- Wind—not the rifle—was the biggest challenge
- Sub-$1,000 setups are more capable than most people think
- Rob and Jeromy proved this rifle can hang with much more expensive builds
The Setup: Affordable but Capable
Before we started sending rounds downrange, here’s exactly what we were running:
🔧 Rifle & Gear Setup
- Rifle: Ruger American Gen 2 (.223)
- Ammo: 69gr Tipped MatchKing
- 25gr Varget
- Starline brass
- Optic: Arken EPL4 4-16×50 FFP
- Suppressor: SilencerCo Omega 300
- Chassis: MDT Field Stock Chassis
Here’s the important part…
👉 This is not a high-dollar precision rifle setup.
This is a real-world, budget-friendly rifle that a lot of shooters already own or are considering.
And honestly—it shoots way better than it should for the price.
Can a Budget Rifle Clear a 500-Yard KYL?
This whole challenge started with a bold claim:
A $600 rifle with a $300 optic should be able to clear a 500-yard KYL in 10 shots.
That’s a big statement—especially for a .223.
First Attempt: Reality Hits
Rob stepped up first, and right away things got interesting.
- Impacts were solid
- Elevation was dialed
- But the wind…
👉 The wind was all over the place
Swirling, switching directions, dropping out—it was one of those days where even a perfect shot can miss.
And that’s exactly what happened.
Despite solid shooting, the KYL wasn’t cleared in 10 shots.
The Real Problem: Wind, Not the Rifle
Here’s something most shooters don’t want to admit:
Missing at distance usually isn’t your rifle—it’s your wind call.
That’s exactly what we saw here.
- Elevation stayed consistent
- Impacts were close
- Shots were grouping well
But the wind kept changing just enough to push shots off target.
Jeromy Steps In… and Proves a Point
Then Jeromy got behind the rifle.
And this is where things got real interesting.
He started working down the KYL rack—and the hits started stacking up.
- Consistent impacts
- Tight grouping
- Clean execution
When he got to the smallest plates?
👉 He was stacking hits on a 2-inch target at 500 yards
Let that sink in.
That’s not luck—that’s a rifle and load combo that works.
What This Rifle Is Actually Capable Of
At one point, shots on the smallest plate were landing within:
👉 ~1.5 to 2-inch grouping at 500 yards
That’s serious performance from a rifle in this price range.
And it confirms something we’ve been saying for a while:
The Ruger American Gen 2 is one of the most underrated rifles out there right now.
Redemption Attempt (Because It Had to Happen)
After watching Jeromy run the target, Rob had to take another shot.
This time with a trigger cam rolling.
And again…
- Good impacts
- Solid shooting
- But the wind kept shifting
Even with better adjustments, the constantly changing conditions made it tough to clean in 10.
He did manage to complete it—but it took one extra shot.
What We Learned
1. This Rifle Is Legit
You don’t need a custom build to shoot distance.
This rifle flat-out performs.
2. Handloads Matter
The 69gr Tipped MatchKing load proved:
- Consistent
- Accurate
- Reliable at distance
Even with slightly off SDs, it still delivered.
3. Wind Is Everything
If you’re missing at 500 yards, it’s probably not your gear.
It’s your wind call.
And on a day like this? Even experienced shooters get humbled.
4. Upgrades Help—But Aren’t Required
The MDT Field Stock Chassis made things more comfortable and stable…
But this rifle shoots great even in the factory stock.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Underestimate Budget Rifles
There’s a big misconception in the shooting world:
Expensive = better performance

This test proves something different.
👉 A well-built, affordable rifle with the right setup can absolutely perform at distance.
The Ruger American Gen 2 isn’t just “good for the price.”
